Keys, Locks, and Doors

My life consists of pretty much 4 things, keys, locks, doors, and a whole ton of irony...but don't get discouraged; it is often the last key that opens the lock.
Day 15:
As a little mini-project for a student group that I work with, I was asked to print out a picture of a “mentor” and explain how s/he influence me.  And who was the first person to come to mind?
Well, other than my lovely parents, the next closest person to a parent that I’ve had, was my band director in high school.
Now, it’s been 3 years since I’ve last performed, but the lessons that I learned under her tutelage are life-lasting.
Honestly, I don’t think that I’d be the man that I am today without her example.
So, what did I learn?
I learned to be passionate for a cause.  In my high school life, it was music.  In my college life, it’s social well-being and activism.  I’m feeling these changes and I feel like I’ve grown a lot in the past couple years, more than what I ever imagined.
I learned to pursue subjects that would interest me.
I learned the importance of establishing those familial relationships outside of your immediate family.
I learned what it meant to perform as one cohesive group, at our maximum potential.
And most importantly, I learned, as the sign over the band room door says, “Never, never, never give up.”
